Disc Golf is a wonderful sport that provides hours of enjoyment for men, women, boys, and girls of all ages. Played much like traditional “ball” golf, disc golf uses flying discs and metal catching baskets instead of clubs and balls. Traditionally, most disc golf courses include 9 or 18 targets. Players compete to throw and land their disc in a basket in the fewest number of throws. Play begins with a drive from a tee (typically a concrete throwing pad) and progress toward the disc golf basket. Most holes are completed with a “putt” in which players land their discs in a basket. Disc Golf is sometimes referred to as “Frisbee Golf” or “Frolf” (named after the popular term Frisbee® which is trademarked by Wham-o Inc). Disc Golf was formalized in the mid 1970’s by “Steady Ed” Headrick and the establishment of the PDGA (Professional Disc Golf Association). The PDGA remains the official governing board over disc golf rules of play, standards, player ratings, and tournament play. Currently, there are over 3,200 disc golf courses established in the United States and more than 3,800 worldwide (including courses reported in 40+ countries).
